Ice hockey has been an official Olympic sport since 1920 when it was first played during the summer Olympics. It became an official winter Olympic sport in 1924. Since its entrance into the international spotlight, six countries have dominated the sport. The so-called “Big Six”, the United States, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Russia, and the Czech Republic have won the vast majority of men’s hockey medals since the sport was added to the Olympic Games. On the women’s side, no team outside of the Canadian or American side has won a gold medal in international competition. The Canadian men’s team won the first seven gold medals up until 1952 except for one, when Great Britain won gold in 1936.
Between 1956 and 1988, the USSR dominated Olympic hockey. The Russians won all but two gold medals during that time. The US team won their first gold medal in hockey in 1960, and famously defeated the Soviets in the semifinals of the 1980 Winter Games in Lake Placid in the “Miracle on Ice” game on their way to their second gold medal. In that game, amateur college players defeated the heavily favored, professional Russian team.
